The upper side of the piston (5) has a central dome-shaped raised section (14). The combustion chamber resulting from the top dead center position of the piston is bounded over its whole height by a conical surface (10) converging towards the exhaust gas outlet (6). The fuel injection component (8) is located in the region of the conical surface and has a principal feed direction set at an angle in relation to the tangential direction. The conical surface is joined by a curvature (11) to an axially parallel cylindrical surface (12) which in the top dead center position of the piston is overlapped by it.
