An air bag cover assembly (10) includes a plastic cover section (12), a switch section (24), a backing section (36), and a set of temporary fasteners (54) for fastening the backing section to the cover section to maintain alignment of sets of holes (21) formed in the cover section (12), the backing section (36), and the fasteners. The temporary fasteners (54) preferably take the form of a set of annular members which are integrally formed on a rearwardly extending member (48) of the backing section and which provides a snap-in fastening of the rearwardly extending member (48) to a side panel of the cover section (12). The rearwardly extending member of the backing section is attached to a back plate of the backing section in a living hinge fashion to facilitate deployment of the air bag.
