<p>A method and arrangement for producing an auditive signal (a wake-up call, an alert signal) to remind a user of a predetermined event is disclosed. By manipulating a parameter of the signal, an indication of the urgency of the reminder is given, for example, the time lapsed since the wake-up time, or the time to lapse until the time of an appointment. In accordance with the invention, said parameter is characteristic of a perceived distance to the sound source. The higher the urgency of the reminder, the larger perceived distance is simulated. Said 'distance of sound' has been found to be a useful metaphor to inform users about the urgency of a reminder. In practical embodiments, the perceived distance is manipulated by controlling, inter alia, the sound intensity, the intensity and pitch of high frequencies in the signal, or the addition of indirect reverb sound. The invention is applicable in virtually all products which produce auditive reminder signals, notably alarm-clocks, personal organizers, telephones and programmable television receivers.</p> |
