PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To mitigate thermal distortion between the outer periphery of a display part and the display part and to stabilize performance for long time by obtaining average gray scale data of a picture signal based on an inputted picture signal and controlling the luminance of a picture displayed on the display part in accordance with the value. SOLUTION: When a picture signal 8 is inputted to a whole screen average gray scale calculation part 112, the gray scale data for one screen in the inputted picture signal 8 is averaged by the number of picture elements existing in the whole display part on average, for example, and the gray scale data per picture element is calculated. Picture element average gray scale data is outputted to a discharging times control part 113 and the number of maintaining pulses which are to be applied to respective picture elements is set based on picture element average gray scale data. Output corresponding to the number is given to an X electrode driving circuit 141 and a Y electrode driving circuit 142. Thus, the number of maintenance discharging times is controlled. Consequently, the luminance of a picture displayed on a display part can be controlled in accordance with the value of picture element average gray scale data by controlling the number of maintenance discharging times. |
