MOTION VECTOR DETECTING METHOD AND ITS DEVICE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To correctly detect a motion vector without regard to the moving quantity of a unit block by determining the size and the position of a searching area for detecting a motion vector between third and second frames according to the size of a motion vector detected between adjacent frames. SOLUTION: A predictive error arithmetic unit 31 for a hierarchical picture and a hierarchical picture generator 26 successively detect a motion vector between fields in adjacent frames at a lower hierarchical level than a desired one from a first frame to a third frame. In order to detect a motion vector between the third and second frames at the desired level according to the size of the detected motion vector, a selecting processor 32 and a second address generator 29 determines the size and the position of a searching area. Based on this decision, the unit 31 correctly detects the motion vector between the third and second frames even in a case when the moving quantity of a unit block is comparatively large.
