PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately retrieve a musical composition provided with performance data corresponding to an inputted phrase by collating with plural musical compositions included in a collation part of performance data of a musical composition that is an object to be retrieved from the viewpoint of pitch difference about a series of musical sounds included in the retrieval phrase and retrieving a desired musical composition. SOLUTION: A retrieval phrase to be selected is inputted by pressing a key/ releasing the key of a keyboard 20. When it is decided that the key is pressed, the pitch difference between preceding key pressing and the key pressing of this time is recorded as a retrieval condition in a retrieval condition storage area provided in a RAM 14. When storing retrieval data in a retrieval phrase storage area and also storing the retrieval condition in a retrieval condition storage area are completed, whether or not the retrieval phrase stored in the retrieval phrase storage area is correct is confirmed. And, a musical composition is retrieved by checking whether or not the pitch difference between mutually adjoining musical sounds of the retrieval phrase coincides with the pitch difference between mutually adjoining musical sounds of music data of the musical composition that is an object to be retrieved.
