An improved method for the preparation of functionalized substituted bisphenol compound is provided. In particular, there is provided a method of making a functionalized substituted bisphenol compound of the formula: which comprises heating a mixture comprising a 2,6-dimethylphenol and levulinic acid in the presence of an effective amount of a macroreticular ion-exchange resin, optionally with removal of the water of reaction.
