PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the image quality of a rear-projection type projection television. SOLUTION: The projection screen 10 is constituted of aλ/4 plate 50, a screen 60, theλ/4 plate 70 and S polarizing film 80. The image light is constituted of only P wave. The image light is converted into P+λ/4 wave by being passed through theλ/4 plate 50, and is passed through the screen 60. Light passed through the screen is converted by theλ/4 plate 70 again so as to be changed to P+λ/4+λ/4 wave. Thus, it is converted into the S wave, and is passed through the S wave polarizing film 80. In the case that external light hits the screen 60 and is reflected, it is reciprocatively polarized and converted twice by theλ/4 plate 70, and is absorbed by the S wave polarizing film 80, so that the deterioration of the image quality caused by the external light is eliminated.
