Hydrophilic fluorinated polymers with fluorine content between 1 and 25% are prepared by reacting a non-fluorinated hydrophilic polymer with a compound containing a perfluoroalkyl group. Hydrophilic fluorinated polymers with fluorine content between 1 and 25% contains groups with formula (I): -CH2-CY-K-O-X(O)-R(Rf) in which: Y = H or methyl; K is selected from: -CO-OCH2CH2-, -CH2-, -CO-OCH2C(H)(CH3)-, -CO-NH-(-CH2)p where p = 1, 2 or 3 and CO(OCH2CH2)q where q = 1-10; X = C or SO; and R(Rf) = 4-20C hydrocarbon with perfluoroalkyl group and, optionally, one or more atoms of sulphur, oxygen or nitrogen; and (II) with formula CH2-C(Y)-KOH; and optionally (III) CH2-C(Z)(Q)- in which: Z = H or methyl; and Q = -O-CO-CH3, -CO-NH2, -COOH; the number of (I) groups = 0.1-5%, number of (II) = 95-99.9% and number of (III) = 0-15%. Independent claims are also included for method for making said polymers; and use of said polymers as additives in fire-retardant compositions.
