The device includes: - a housing (2) in which is an opening (4) and a window (5). The housing (2) has two reference points (4, 7) one of which is in the window (5); - a tape (3) which can be wound into the housing (2) and can slide through the opening (4), passing under the window (5). A face of the tape (3) includes different values to be converted and another face includes corresponding counter values. The two sets of values are arranged with respect to each other, and the reference points (4,7) are related to each other so that when a value is at one of the reference points the counter value can be read off at the other reference point.
