PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the reduction of contrast in the direction of visual angle peculiar to liquid crystal and the inversion of assigning intensity level by displaying a picture by utilizing variations in a transmitting light quantity of a picture element caused by rotating a polarizer. SOLUTION: A scanning signal is impressed on a control electrode via a scanning line 2, and a potential is supplied to a picture element electrode 4 from a signal line 3 via a switching element 1. Due to the supply of the potential to the picture element electrode 4, a relative potential between the electrode potential of this picture element electrode 4 and an electrified stopper 6 changes. An electrified part 53 formed projectingly in one body in the fringing part of a transparent turning disk 51 of the picture element corresponding to the transition of this relative potential is electro-statically driven, and as a result, the picture element turns about the shaft. When a light source is installed below the picture element, the light made incident from the lower side of the transparent turning disk 51 transmits a polarizer 52 and is radiated upward. A quantity of light transmitting the polarizer 52 is regulated by a rotation angle of the polarizer 52. |
