The invention relates to an electrochemical sensor element, especially provided for determining the oxygen content in gas mixtures. Said sensor has at least one measuring electrode (15) which is exposed to a gas to be measured, at least one reference electrode (17) which is exposed to a reference gas, and at least one heating device (23). The sensor also comprises a reference gas channel (21) through which the reference gas is supplied to the reference electrode (17). The reference electrode (17) is in contact with the reference gas via a volume provided with pores. The volume is constructed in a stratified plane between the reference gas channel (21) and the reference electrode (17).
