To operate the drive for the ring rail, of a ring spinner or twister, the actual stroke movement position of the ring rail is measured in the direction change phase directly at the ring rail, independently of the rotary angle signals of the drive motor for the ring rail stroke movement. The registered movement pattern, at the direction change, is compared with the optimum movement at this phase for the required movement pattern for the textile technology in force, for a correction to be generated. The correction structure is taken with negative signs at the working program to be synchronized as a correction value. The corrected program is used for the ring rail drive motor for a number of stroke positions as a control program with variable setting values. The program for the ring rail movements has a number of successive program segments which can be accessed. A program segment for the direction change is stored together with the program segments for the up and down movements. The stroke shift of the stroke position of the ring rail (3) is a variable component of a program segment. All the program segments are worked according to the cycle signals from the transmitter (23) at the feed roller (21) of the drawing unit (2). For similar program segments, a number of program variants are available with a free selection for different parameters. The program variants differ in the number of pulses from the feed drawing roller (21) and/or the pulse count from the ring rail drive motor (32). An Independent claim is included for the ring rail drive with two transmitter/sensor units (35,36;33) in the drive transmission. The first unit (33) is near the ring rail drive motor (32), and the second unit (35,36) is near the ring rail (3). Both units are linked to the control (6). Preferred Features: The first unit (33) is an incremental transmitter at the drive motor for the ring rail stroke movements.
