A procedure for adjusting an exhaust turbocharger with variable turbine geometry in the engine braking regime has engine operational parameters measured to determine a positional signal for the turbine geometry. As engine operational parameters, the charging pressure in the induction pipe and the exhaust counter-pressure in the exhaust path in front of the turbocharger are measured. A total pressure is determined as the sum of these two pressures and the turbine geometry is adjusted until the total pressure agrees with a maximum pressure. The actual engine speed is determined and to each engine speed is assigned a maximum pressure for the sum of intake and exhaust pressures.
