The apparatus for melt spinning polymers into filaments has a filter (42) as a continuous sieve wall (44) with a U-shaped configuration, an open end and a tapering end, and an inner zone (58) for the molten polymer material. A feed system delivers molten polymer into the inner zone, for it to pass out through the sieve wall as filtered polymer. The spinneret has at least one extrusion jet with a number of filament extrusion openings to take the filtered polymer to be extruded into filaments. The sieve wall (44) is vertical with the open end upwards and the tapering end aligned downwards. The polymer feed has a ring passage which supports the filter (42), and is free from any other filter medium. The sieve wall is ring-shaped, with an upper ring open end (46) and a tapering lower ring end (48) to give a ring inner zone (58) to take the molten polymer. The shape gives a filter with a U-shaped axial cross section. The polymer feed unit is a body with a ring-shaped passage for the polymer flow, supporting the sieve wall. The passage is free of any other filtration medium, and the sieve wall (44) is the only filter for the polymer. An Independent claim is included for a polymer melt spinning process with a filtering stage for the molten polymer through to the extrusion jets of the spinneret.
