To dry a moving wet fiber web, a compressed air cushion (2) is formed on one side of the web (1), which presses steam out of the web (1) from the side away from the compressed air cushion (2). Suction is applied to the side of the web (1) away from the air cushion (2), which is at a pressure of 0.01-0.2 bar. An Independent claim is included for an assembly with a compressed air cushion (2) between the web (1) and a guide (3), which is impermeable to air. Preferred Features: An air-permeable support (4) is at the side of the web (1) away from the air cushion (2) as a perforated and/or ridged guide roller (6), with an air-permeable belt (5). The guide (4) is under suction. The air-permeable belt (5) passes round the perforated/ridged guide roller (6) together with the web (1) on it. The solid guide (3) forms a wedge-shaped entry zone with the web (1), tapering in the direction of travel (7). The gap between the web (1) and guide (3) is 0.01-20.0 mm, especially at the end zone in the direction (7) of movement, with a variable gap at the start and/or end, with self-adjustment against spring forces. The length of the solid guide (3) is 0.05-1.5 m in the direction of travel (7), and preferably 0.2-0.5 m. The solid guide (3) is a plate, fixed at least partially, or a continuous belt, and is heated. Compressed air is blown between the guide (3) and web (1), especially at the start zone, using heated air. The end of the air cushion (2) is defined at the end of the guide (3) by blower jets or bristles across the line (7) of web travel. The air-permeable belt (5) is a press blanket or a drying mesh.
