A forgery deterent and authentication method for signatures placed on a document or other object is disclosed. A forgery-proof information bearing medium (Electronic Fingerprint or "EF") is issued to a person whose signature (11) is being protected by a central registrar ("CR"). The actual signature (11) of the Principal (10) is encoded into the EF (30) which, when read by the CR (90), displays an exact Facsimile Signature (33) of the actual signature (11) of the Principal (10). A personal identification number ("PIN") which has been assigned by the CR (90) to the Principal (10) is also encoded on the EF (30). In addition to the PIN (31), the EF (30) contains another Code (32) that is distinct for each EF (30) distributed to the Principal (10). The Principal (10) must acknowledge to the CR (90), through the use of his PIN (31), that he has received physical possession of the EFs (30) before the EFs (30) are considered valid. |
