A FILTRATION DEVICE AND A SCREENING DEVICE

A filtration device (10) is described which includes a filter element (12), a reflector element (14) and a series of deflector ribs (16A-16D). The filter element (12) is made from a ceramic substrate of homogenous porosity and density. The reflector element (14) includes a plurality of elongate reflector members (18A-18E) each defining a longitudinal channel (20A-20E) respectively. The reflector members (18) are C-shaped in cross section with each of the channels (20) being generally aligned with the direction of fluid flow through the filtration device (10). The C-shaped reflector members (18) are embedded within the ceramic filter substrate (12) and are made of a relatively non-porous material. The deflector ribs (16A-16D) are located across a gap defined between adjacent reflector members (18) and are set on an upstream facing surface of the substrate (12). Each of the ribs (16) is raised a predetermined distance from the adjacent reflector members (18) so as to form a flow opening through which a fluid stream can pass during filtration. The reflector element (14) is designed to deflect a portion of the fluid passing through the filter element (12) back toward an upstream surface of the substrate. This reverse flow of fluid through the filter element reduces the retention of particles and in particular the build-up of "biofilm" on or within the filter element.
