摘要 A superconducting wire comprises a multiplicity of flat superconducting filaments (based on a ceramic superconducting material) in a medium. The superconducting wire has a generally circular cross section (preferably either round or hexagonal) and the individual superconducting filaments are oriented such that their widthwise axes are each substantially coincident with a radius of the wire. The wire may be made by forming a multiplicity of monofilamentary structures each comprising a region of superconductor in an outer sheath, assembling the monofilamentary structures in a round tubular member, and drawing or otherwise reducing the assembly down to a wire by choosing cross sections of the monofilamentary structures and their positions in the tubular member such that, after reduction, the resulting filaments are flat and aligned with their widthwise axes substantially coincident with respective radii of the wire. For example, the monofilamentary structures may be triangular or trapezoidal, or they may be circular but supported in a ring around the wall of the round tubular member by an inner tube that will collapse as reduction progresses. Insulating filaments can be interspersed, if desired, to reduce A C losses. Preferably reduction includes initial drawing followed by at least one rolling or swaging step for better density.
