The present invention relates to a method for operating a multiple-fuel two-stroke internal combustion engine. The compression rate is modified by applying an action on the pivot of the articulated connecting-rod of the piston using an idler lever whose tilting angle is shifted under the action of a profiled cam cinematically connected to the crankshaft. In order to increase the piston stroke, the pivot of the articulated connecting-rod is displaced away from the cylinder axis when the piston reaches the dead centre, wherein said dead centre is determined from the crank radius and from the length of the connecting-rod. It is thus possible to modify the position of the bottom dead centre, after which the pivot is brought back towards the cylinder axis.
