PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polarization scramber which is small in insertion loss by changing the optical path differences of respective branched light with an optical path length varying control means. SOLUTION: The thickness of an LiTaO3 plate 109 changes when voltage is applied on this LiTaO3 plate 109 and, therefore, the optical path difference arises between two branched light L11 and L12 and the interference conditions at a half mirror 102 change. The intensity ratio of the two output light L13, L14, therefore, changes. The light L13 is reflected by a mirror 106 and is then made incident on a polarization beam splitter(PBS) 103 through aλ/2 plate 108. The light L14 is reflected by a mirror 107 and is then made incident directly on this PBS 103. At this time, the plane of polarization of the light L13 is rotated 90 by theλ/2 plate 108 and, therefore, the two light L13, L14 are made into the two orthogonal polarized wave components of the output light Lout of the PBS 103. Then, the plane of polarization of the output polarized light is rotated by changing the intensity ratio of the two orthogonal polarized wave components of the output light Lout.
