Dye composition for colouring keratin fibres, especially hair

A novel composition for colouring keratin fibres is prepared by mixing, immediately prior to use, (A) a composition comprising an indoxyl ester of formula (I) in a carrier and (B) an organic or inorganic base. R = 1-6C alkyl; X,Y = H, halogen, OH or 1-4C alkoxy. Also claimed is a method for dyeing hair, involving applying the above composition to the hair, allowing the composition to act on the hair for 10-45 mins. at 15-50 deg C, rinsing with water, optionally shampooing and drying.
