A first filter body (10) is particularly designed for fuel to be sucked through it. At a top point before this body and where gas escaping from the fuel collects a bypass (5) is provided across the body. The bypass leads to the clean side of the filter, and contains a second filter body (6). The geometry of the bypass is such that the flow rate through it is appreciably lower than that through the first body. The flow-resistance to gas through the second body can be lower than that through the first, and the bypass can lead to an ejector pump (7) in the clean fuel outlet pipe (2) from the first body. A vent valve (8) can be provided at the gas-collecting point vertically above the inlet side of the first body.
