Particle clumps in powdery or granular materials are broken up by ultrasonic treatment. Independent claims are also included for the following: (i) preparation of a concrete or mortar by subjecting a siliceous or silicon-based mineral material component to the above process before incorporation in the concrete or mortar mixture; and (ii) a concrete or mortar containing a siliceous or silicon-based material which has a free submicron particle content of greater than 55 (preferably greater than 65) wt.%.
