Timer signals for measurements are obtained from the rotation of the working roll (13). A start signal is produced after each complete revolution of the working roll to establish the beginning or end of the measurement period, so that each measured value in each measurement period can be related to a predeterminable angle of rotation of this roll. An Independent claim is also included for the apparatus for carrying out the method which is characterized by the fact that the timer (26) is connected to the working roll in such a way that timer signals produced can be related to the angle of rotation of the roll.
