PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate irregularity in light quantity reduction even when a restrictor opening quantity or electronic shutter speed is different in an electronic endoscope to read all pixels by providing a light shielding period. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal shutter 23 is disposed between a restrictor blade 22 to restrict a light flux incidental from a light source lamp 14 and a light guide, and this liquid crystal shutter 23 is on-/off-controlled by a control circuit 26, so light from the lamp 14 is transmitted for a moving picture, and that light is shielded for a still picture. A response time in setting a light shielding period is extremely shortened by this, and light quantity reduction generated by the response time becomes an ignorable value. For signals for the still picture, signals for all picture elements obtained by a CCD 12 by one exposure are read utilizing the light shielding period, and a pixel mixing process is then conducted, thereby a picture image of a high picture quality and of a stable brightness can be provided.
