PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain lithium cobaltate comprising crystals well-grown particularly in the layer direction and having stable good crystallinity by melting and reacting a cobalt compd. in the presence of a lithium-base flux having reactivity with the cobalt compd. by heating at a specified temp. in an oxygen atmosphere. SOLUTION: A cobalt compd. such as cobalt carbonate, oxyhydroxide, hydroxide, oxide hydrate or sulfate is melted and reacted in the presence of a lithium- base flux, preferably lithium chloride and/or hydroxide by heating at 400-800 deg.C in an oxygen atmosphere, e.g. in air. The flux is preferably used by >=10 mol per 1 mol cobalt compd. When lithium chloride is used as the flux, the heating temp. is preferably in the range of 600-75 deg.C. After the end of the reaction, water is added to dissolve the flux, solid-liq. separation is carried out and the solid is washed and dried to obtain the objective lithium cobaltate for a secondary battery. |
