The dangerous gap between the moved step (1) and the fixed pedestal plates (10) provided at bath sides of the treadable stair belt is covered by this safety equipment with the aid of an elastic synthetic material lip (6; 7; 8; 9) fastened in the region of the tread surface (1.1) and the riser (1.2) at the side edges of the step (1) of an escalator. The synthetic material lips (6; 7; 8; 9) is a part of a synthetic material insert piece (2; 3; 4; 5), which can be screwed on in corresponding recesses on both sides of the body of the step (1) in the region of the horizontal tread surface (1.1) and in the region of the arcuate riser (1.2). In the case of possible inaccuracies of the pedestal plate (10), it adapts to this and displays a very low co-efficient of friction. The synthetic material lip (6; 7; 8; 9) is so made fast at the step (1) that the clearance for the passage of the step (1) through a comb arranged at the upper and at the lower end of the travel path of the escalator need be enlarged only minimally and it is screwable onto or off from the step (1) at any time together with the insert piece (2; 3; 4; 5) without the step (1) having to be dissassembled from the stair belt.
