Beneficiation of nickel-containing laterite comprises chloride addition (24), prior to reduction (20) to form magnetic metallic nickel which can be magnetically separated (28). An Independent claim is also included for beneficiation of nickel-containing laterite by: (a) roasting (20) a mixture of the mineral with added reducing agent (22) and a quantity of calcium chloride (24) which is insufficient to cause significant nickel transfer to a carbon phase but sufficient to promote formation of magnetic reduced nickel; (b) recovering the reduced nickel as a magnetic fraction (30) by magnetic separation; and (c) melting the magnetic fraction in a d.c. electric arc furnace (36) to produce ferronickel (38). |
