PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alkaline storage battery which has a high energy density, is excellent in performance regarding resistance to overdischarge, is well- balanced in battery characteristics over a wide temperature range, and undergoes little capacity deterioration, particularly when a cycle of charge and discharge is repeated at high temperatures. SOLUTION: An unsintered positive electrode for an alkaline battery has a mixture of nickel hydroxide solid solution particles having cover layers of a cobalt oxide of higher than 3.0 valences and metal yttrium powders or yttrium oxide powders by 0.1 to 5.0 pts.wt. for the amount of the nickel hydroxide solid solution particles covered with the cobalt oxide.
