PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a photoreceptor which causes no microscopic fluctuations of the resistance of the photoreceptor and which enables formation of a good image without failure by forming a conductive protective layer containing at least an amorphous metal oxide conducting agent on a photosensitive layer. SOLUTION: This photoreceptor has a conductive protective layer containing an amorphous metal oxide conducting agent on a photosensitive layer. As for the conducting agent, a colloidal metal oxide sol is used. This sol is amorphous and has a broad scattering range with >=5 halfwidth having the peak between 20 deg. and <=70 deg. of Bragg angle 28 measured by X-ray diffraction method using CuKαray. As for the conductive base body, a material having <=1×10<8>Ω.cm volume resistivity is used. As for the metal oxide, for example, ZnO, TiO2 , SnO2 or the like is preferably used. As for the production method, any methods such as by dispersing metal oxide superfine particles in a proper solvent or by decomposing a solvent-soluble metal compd. in a solvent can be used.
