PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical module small in size and variable in optical characteristics without being affected by disturbance. SOLUTION: A magnetic field producing means produces a magnetic field to apply an attractive force and a repulsive force to a metal plate 13 on an optical waveguide substrate 1 and tensile or compressive stress to the surface and inside of an optical waveguide, and the optical waveguide substrate 1 is finely deformed to vary the optical characteristics. When the magnetic field producing means comprises a coil 9 and a current adjusting means, the magnetic force can be varied by adjusting the current flowing to the coil 9 and then the optical characteristics can be varied. An optical waveguide substrate with a thin metal film can be formed by vapor-depositing a metal film on a substrate which is made of the same material with the optical waveguide substrate 1 and thinner than the optical waveguide substrate 1. When the optical waveguide substrate 1 is fixed to a storage tray 6 with an elastic adhesive, it becomes easier to finely deform the optical waveguide substrate 1. |
