PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the dispersion of light quantity decline by fixing the response time of a light shielding mechanism even in the case that a diaphragm opening amount is different in an electronic endoscope for providing the light shielding period and reading all picture elements. SOLUTION: By providing a light shielding mask 23 provided with a rectangular opening 23A and moving a light shielding shutter 24 in a horizontal direction orthogonal to a diaphragm plate 22 moved in a vertical direction, since the light shielding period is set by the fixed response time of the light shielding shutter 24, the ratio of the light quantity decline is fixed. Then, for the signals of still images for instance, by reading the signals of all the picture elements obtained in a CCD by one exposure while utilizing the light shielding period and performing a picture element mixing processing later, the still images of high image quality of fixed brightness are obtained. On the other hand, for moving images, picture element mixed signals are formed at the time of read from the CCD as before.
