摘要
1485335 Producing manganese DEEPSEA VENTURES Inc 15 May 1975 [20 May 1974] 20636/75 Heading C7D Mn is produced by reacting an oxide or halide of Mn with a subhalide of a transport element selected from Al, Si or Ti, i.e. AlX, SiX 2 or TiX 2 (where X=halogen), to form Mn and the normal halide, i.e. AlX 3 , SiX 4 or TiX 4 . Fig. 1 illustrates the reaction of MnO with AlX and a flux in reactor 12, removing Mn at 51, AlX 3 to converter 31 and Al 2 O 3 + flux to smelter 24 where they meet a source of carbon (coal, coke, charcoal, tar, graphite etc) to form Al which passes to converter 31 to regenerate AlX with the AlX 3 from reactor 12. To prevent the formation of aluminium carbide in smelter 24, a small amount of Si is added, which alloys with Al. Flux from smelter 24 is recycled together with the AlX from converter 31. When using a manganese halide, Fig. 2 (not shown) an alloy of Mn and the transport element may be produced, which is refined to Mn in furnace (60) by reaction with, e.g. AlX 3 , the AlX produced being recycled to the reactor. A further portion of AlX 3 is reacted with water to produce HX, and Al 2 O 3 which reacts as before to produce Al (as Al-Si) which reacts with a third portion of AlX 3 forming AlX, which is recycled. When pure Mn is produced from Mn halide, the refining furnace (60) is not used. In Examples, Mn 2 O 3 is reacted with AlCl (Ex I), MuCl 2 with AlCl, producing Mn-Al which is refined to Mn by reaction with AlCl 3 (Ex II), and MnF2 with AlF (Ex III). Preferred fluxes for use in the reactor are alkali metal and alkaline earth metal fluorides.
