1290176 Glass-fibre manufacture W H W SCHULLER 18 July 1969 [18 July 1968] 36323/69 Heading C1M In a method of making glass-fibre bodies in which glass filaments are passed to a drum for attenuation to fibres, a coating liquid such as a lubricant is applied to the fibre in two separate applications, one prior to the fibre passing to the drum and the second after leaving the drum. The first application is made using an oiling strip d after which the fibres f are passed to a drum 1 and confined thereto by a rotary air blast S provided in a channel 4 which extends along the entire length of the drum. The fibres are removed from the drum by a stripper 2 and carried by the air blast past a coating roller 7 supplied continuously with liquid from a dripping or spraying device 8 and along a guiding device 6 to the position at which the fibres are consolidated into a fibrous body. In a modification the fibres pass from the drum 1 along a guide 19 and into a " spinning funnel" 11 which comprises two cylindrical sections 13, 12 divided by a circumferential aperture, the section 13 having perforations 14, where the fibres undertake a vortex motion to emerge from an orifice 15 as a sliver FB. The liquid coating is applied by the inner periphery of a rotating ring 17. The ring 17 is provided with bores (22), Fig. 4, not shown, which convey liquid from a reservoir to the inner periphery 18 by virtue of the rotation of the ring. The ring 17 may be replaced by three rotating discs disposed 120 degrees apart around the funnel, one being supplied with liquid from a reservoir and the other two from dripping devices. In further modifications the circumferential wall of the spinning funnel has an axial aperture through which protrudes a member carrying a piece of felt which is supplied with liquid from a reservoir or a tongue carrying a fine wire mesh. |
