PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To satisfactorily purify such harmful elements contained in exhaust gas as CO, HC, and NOx emitted from an engine in a condition not quite warmed up immediately after starting it. SOLUTION: This device 10 includes at least a first exhaust gas purifing device 16 and a second exhaust gas purifing device 17 arranged in the sequence from an exhaust gas outlet of an internal combustion engine 1 to the downstream of the exhaust gas flow. In this case, the first exhaust gas purifing device 16 is loaded with at least one ceramic honeycomb structural body of a cell cross section hexagonal shape and (1) the thickness of the outer circumferential bulkhead of the cell cross section hexagonal ceramic honeycomb structural body is made thicker than that of the center, or (2) the outer circumferential cell shape of the cell cross section hexagonal ceramic honeycomb structural body is changed to a cell cross section quadrangle or (3) a reinforcement rib is formed on the outer circumferential cell of the cell cross section hexagonal ceramic honeycomb structural body. |
