<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the occurrence of the collision sound of a sheet conveying means by releasing a sheet for a sheet conveying means engaged with the sheet without releasing a sheet for a sheet conveying means engaged with no sheet, then making the position adjustment of the sheet. SOLUTION: The size of a sheet is judged, a conveyance roller 9 is rotated until the rear end of the sheet leaves an inversion roller 8 for the sheet judged as short in length in the conveying direction, and the sheet is released with the D-cut section of the conveyance roller 9 located below. A lateral registration adjustment is made in this state, the conveyance roller 9 is rotated after the lateral registration adjustment to convey the sheet to the downstream side. When a sheet is judged to be longer than the prescribed length, pressures of both the conveyance roller 9 and the inversion roller 8 are released to release the sheet.
