PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently produce the subject compound under the action of a fine heterogeneous catalyst by reacting an alkali metal amalgam with an alcohol in the presence of the powder catalyst comprising the carbide, nitride or carbonitride of a transition metal. SOLUTION: This method for producing an alkali metal alkolate (especially potassium tertiary butylate) comprises reacting an alkali metal amalgam with an alcohol (preferably a 1-5C aliphatic alcohol) in the presence of a powder form catalyst (preferably an average particle diameter of 1-10μm, especially preferably 2μm) comprising the carbine, nitride or carbonitride of a transition metal (especially suitably the carbide of metal molybdenum, metal tungsten or those of the metals, such as Mo2 C or WC).
