PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface treated steel member exhibiting excellent performance not only in wear resistance but also in the aspect of corrosion resistance. SOLUTION: In a steel member in which gas soft-nitriding treatment is executed at 570 to 580 deg.C to form a compd. layer composed mainly of epsilon iron nitride (ε-Fe2-3 N) on the surface, at the time of executing the gas soft-nitriding treatment, by suitably setting the mixing ratios of gaseous ammonia, gaseous nitrogen and carbon dioxide, the concn. of carbon in the thickness direction of the compd. layer is regulated to 0.4 to 0.8 wt.%, and the wear resistance in the thickness direction of the compd. layer is made certain to prevent the deterioration in its corrosion resistance according to the progress of wear.
