PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simply obtained the subject compound useful as an intermediate for producing a medicine, a raw material for various materials such as polyesters, or the like by reacting a specific diol with a prescribed carbonic acid ester in the presence of a weak acid of an alkali metal or the like. SOLUTION: A diol of formula I ((n) is 0-5; R<1> and R<2> are each H or a nonreactive organic group) is reacted with a carbonic acid ester of formula II (R<3> and R<4> are each a nonreactive organic group) (e.g. dimethyl carbonate, ethyl methyl carbonate or the like) in an amount of 0.8-5 times the molar amount of the diol in the presence of an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal weak acid (preferably carbonate, hydrogencarbonate, carboxylate or the like) preferably at -10 to 100 deg.C to give a cyclic carbonic acid ester of formula III. The compound of formula III is preferably formed while retaining the stereostructure of the diol of formula I containing a carbon atom being an asymmetric carbon atom either at theα-position or theβ-position. The reaction mixture of the compounds of formula I and formula II is preferably neutralized and distilled.
