PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coater and a coating method which can produce a thin layer-coated product which has a uniform coating film thickness and is free from nonuniformity failure stably at a high speed. SOLUTION: A coating liquid A is applied on the coating surface of a support 1, with a liquid 6 mainly consisting of an organic solvent applied in advance on the coating surface to seal liquid, by an extrusion type application head 10 having a front edge 2 positioned on the upstream side to the support transfer direction V and at least one back edge 3 which is located on the downstream side, forms a slit between it and the front edge of which is positioned to retreat in the anti-support direction from the tangent in the slit outlet part of the front edge 2. The clearance precision in the support width direction of the slit for discharging the coating liquid A is set up to be 5% or below of a clearance average, and the straightness in the support width direction of each edge face 5, 7 of the front edge 2 and the back edge 3 is set up to be 30μm or below.
