The sluicing cylinder (4) having neutral buoyancy, is inserted into the pipeline (1) on a cable and winch (5,6) through the manhole (3). The diameter of the sluice ball (4) is less than the pipe (1) and it is passed through at a rate less than the natural flow (7) of the flushing water. The velocity (8) through the restricted gap is considerably increased, and disturbs sediment (9) which is entrained and flushed away. Independent claims are included for a device for constricting the cross-section of a liquid pipeline for carrying out the method and a pipe system.
