Production of vinyl naphthalene derivatives comprises reacting a naphthalene derivative with an olefin in the presence of a catalyst comprising trans-di-p-acetato-bis(2-(bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)phosphino)-2-methylpro pyl-C,P)dipalladium(II) or a related palladium complex. Production of vinyl naphthalene derivatives of formula (I) comprises reacting a naphthalene derivative of formula (II) with an olefin of formula (III) in the presence of a catalyst comprising a palladium complex of formula (IV): R1a-R7a = H, F, Cl, CF3, OH, R1b, R3b, OR1b, OR3b, CHO, COOH, COOR1b, COOR3b, CH=CHCOOH, CH=CHCOOR1b, OCOR1b, SOR1b, SO2R1b, SO3H, SO2OCF3, NO2, CN, NH2, NHR1b, N(R1b)2, NHCHO, NHCOR2b, N(R2b)COR2b, CONH2, NHCOOR1b, PO(R3b)2, PO(R2b)2 or C(R8a)=CR9aR10a; R8a = H, F, R1b, OR1b or R3b; R9a, R10a = H, F, CN, R1b, R3b, OR2b, OR3b, COR2b, COR3b, COOH, COOR1b, COOR3b, SO3H, SO2OR2b, SO2R2b, NHR2b, CONH2, CONHR2b, CON(R2b)2, P(O)R3b, PO(R2b)2 or OP(O)OH; R1b = 1-8C alkyl, R2b = 1-4C alkyl; R3b = optionally substituted 3-10C aryl; X = I, Br, Cl, OSO2Ph, OSO2CF3 or OSO2Me; R1a-R10a can also = X in (II) or (III); R<1>, R<2> = H, F, R2b, R3b, R4b, OR2b, NHR2b, COOR2b or OCOR2b R<3>-R<6> = R1b, R3b or R4b; Y = an anion; R4b = 3-12C cycloalkyl.
