The appliance monitors the relative position between a rod and a reference base (13), which can move relative to one another in the longitudinal direction of the rod, in contact with the outer periphery of the rod and supported on the reference base so that it can rotate there is a roller travel sensor (18). As the reference basis move the sensor roller runs along the rod and is linked to a rotation monitor (2). The reference base is divided into a mount (14) and a roller carrier (15). The roller carrier is coupled to the mount free from backlash and moves transversely to longitudinal direction of rod and to axis of rotation of the travel sensor. On the roller carrier not only the travel sensor but also at least one support roller (25,26) diametrically opposed and in contact with outer periphery of rod, is supported so that it can rotate.
