<p>A roped hydraulic elevator has a hydraulic jack (24) whose plunger end (26) is secured to an overhead beam (30) and whose lower end is free to move vertically. A first sheave (32) is supported by the lower end of the jack (24), and at least one overhead sheave (20, 22) is supported in the upper hoistway region (24a). A rope (50) extends downwardly around the first sheave (32), upwardly to the overhead sheave (20, 22) and downwardly to the elevator car (10). A counterweight (36) is supported by the lower end of the jack (24). The system allows the use of a shorter jack (24) or a greater range of car (10) travel.</p> |
