The control system provides an automatic gear changing mode and a manual gear changing mode by controlled engagement of a first friction clutch (B/B) and controlled disengagement of a second friction clutch (LR/B). A pair of magnetic valves (11,12) increase the oil pressure for the first friction clutch and reduce the oil pressure for the second friction clutch, in response to respective electrical signals. The signal for engagement of the first friction clutch is delayed relative to the signal for disengagement of the second friction clutch when the hydraulic oil temperature is below a given value.
