PURPOSE: A method for driving an active matrix display device is provided to reduce the potential variation range of data while the direction of electric fields applied to liquid crystal molecules is inverted. CONSTITUTION: A method for driving an active matrix display device includes the steps of: applying a first potential to each common line when a selection pulse is applied to a corresponding one of the scan lines; changing the first potential to a second potential being selected from VH and VL, where VH>VL, and different from the first potential, and keeping each of the common lines at the second potential during a period when the selection pulse is not applied to the corresponding one of the scan lines; and applying a potential(VD) to the pixel electrode. The active matrix display device includes a plurality of scan lines(Xn), a plurality of data lines(Pm), a plurality of common lines(Yn), a pixel capacitor element having a pixel electrode and a switching element.
