The invention relates to a method for producing a supported catalyst used for the production of 1,2-dichloroethane by tabletting a mixture of pseudo-boehmite and gamma alumina at a weight ratio of between 4:1 to 1:4, possibly with the addition of tabletting aids. Said support is then charged with the active components by impregnation with a CuCl2/KCl solution such that the copper content is between 1 and 15 weight % and the potassium content is between 0.1 and 8 weight %, in each case in relation to the total mass of the catalyst. The catalyst is then dried at between 60 and 400 DEG C. In addition to the elements copper and potassium the catalyst can be charged with elements from the group comprising Li, Na, Cs, Mg, Ca and the rare-earth metals.
