The airbag release method uses an airbag control device (3, coupled to at least one acceleration sensor (4) and a detection sensor (5) for the seat position of a passenger. When a first retardation threshold is reached, the time points for beginning and end of the airbag detonation are calculated and the seat position sensor activated upon a second retardation threshold being reached. An Independent claim is also included for an airbag release device.
