The object of the present invention is a method for diagnosing epilepsy or other neurodegenerative disorders in an individual, comprising measuring from a sample from said individual, one or more cathepsins selected from the group consisting of cathepsin S, cathepsin B and cathepsin L, and optionally also cystatin B inhibitor.
